The Apostle Paul instructed that we pray for our governmental leaders (for everyone, regardless of party), why? So that we may have peace, godliness and dignity. As believers we ought to pray regularly for the government, not just before elections, for even a casual glance across the land shows that we do not have this peace, godliness, nor dignity.
First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all those who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good, and it pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 1 Tim 2:1-4
You are encouraged to review any of the 30 PrayerPodcats from previous newsletters and we invite you join us to pray Biblical prayers for our nations officials. We will pray first for their salvation, then for their wisdom and protection, and more. We pray not specifically for our preferred party, but that His Will Be Done on Earth as in Heaven!
Here Are 7 Prayers For Our Government
Let the Word be heard - we want to focus on the most important task of hearing the Gospel. Let’s pray from Romans 10:14 and focus on asking God for a clear presentation of His Word, and hear the message of the Gospel of Jesus.
Conviction and Confession - we are praying today praying from James 4:8. This would apply to others as well, but let’s focus now on those in authority as we pray for good government, that they may draw near, cleanse their hands, and purify their hearts.
Trusting, Leaning and Learning - Proverbs 3 v 5-8 tells us to not lean on our own understanding, and to not be wise in our own eyes. We need to acknowledge the Lord and Ask. We will pray for our government officials that they learn to lean on Him.
Govern by the Word - As we pray from Psalm 19 v 7-11 for our public servants, we pray they would know and value the commandments of God and teachings of Christ, and may these guide them in how they live, serve, and govern.
Humility and Meekness - Jesus said those recognized as having authority lord it over us, rather than showing humility and meekness. We are reminded to be ready for every good deed, peaceable and to malign no one. Our prays are from Titus 3 v 1-2.
Help in trouble - God is our refuge, and very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear. Psalm 46 reminds us of ancient truths, that the Lord of hosts is with us. Today pray for our nation and government, that He may be exalted among the nations!
Shine upon us - We pray finally from Psalm 67 – Let us bow and remind the Lord of our petitions and ask the Lord to bless us and keep us, to make His face shine upon us and be gracious to us, the Lord lift up His countenance to us and give us peace (Numbers 6:24-26).
Though a nations government may think itself as god, we are reminded that it is not. Isaiah 9:6-7 tells us:
For unto us a Child is born,Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
Jesus is King! And we pray the United States of America will turn to Him and bow down to serve Him, love Him, obey Him, and give Him the honor and glory He is due!
