Personal Prayer - with J.C. Ryle
Personal prayer seems to be the most neglected of all Christian duties, which is unfortunate because private prayer is the true measure of a Christian’s walk before God and ‘the pith and marrow of practical Christianity’.
Personal prayer, or devotional praying leads to the new birth, strengthens faith, moves mountains, and promotes spiritual growth and contentment that rises above circumstances.
This private praying is asking God to break forth in us what He wants for us. He wants us to bear the fruit of the Spirit, walk in His Wisdom, be mature in Christ, operate in serving others using His gifts, and stand on His Word.
On the other hand, prayerlessness is the broad road leading to Hell for the unbeliever and the major cause of backsliding in the Christian.
“What is the reason that some believers are so much brighter and holier than others? I believe the difference, in nineteen cases out of twenty, arises from different habits about private prayer. I believe that those who are not eminently holy pray little, and those who are eminently holy pray much.”
Devotional Prayers for Personal Growth
Monday – Reverence [Isa 8:13 ESV] But the LORD of hosts, him you shall honor as holy. Let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.
Tuesday – Diligence [Col 1:11 ESV] ...being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy;
Wednesday – Love [Rom 5:5 ESV] ...because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
Thursday – Words [Psa 19:14 ESV] Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.
Friday – Wisdom [Eph 1:17 ESV] ...that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him,
Saturday – Obedience [Psa 119:10 ESV] With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments!
