Our cry to the Lord is that we would be a vessel of His choosing for His usefulness. We are a lump of clay on a wheel and He is the divine Potter, so may He form us and fashion us for a purpose all His own and use us accordingly.
In a recent newsletter we looked at how to FOCUS our prayers. Each letter was a reminder, and the U was to pray for usefulness, that is on asking the Lord to make us useful for the Kingdom of God. I often pray that - like a staff in Moses hand or like the sling in young David’s, I might be of use for Him. May He fit us for every good work of service, that we would bear fruit, do the work of ministry, stand firm is all His will.
And, like Epaphras, may we be made useful as prayers, laboring always for the saints of God. May our private prayer times be constant intercession for one another (or imploring the divine grace and mercy in behalf of others. Whitfield) to be mature and stand assured in all the will of God.
In this way we love one another.
So pray much to be used of the Lord - to pray for others, to bless others, to serve others, to love others, to preach, teach and evangelize, to make disciples, etc.
Pray that God would wield you like a piece of sharpened steel, says Pastor J.D. Hall; ask Him to let you be His puppet, His pawn, His tool. Plead that God would make use of you, and I assure you He will.
In this way we could perhaps be extraordinary Christ followers.
Why Do We Intercede?
Says Whitfield: He that every day heartily intercedes at the throne of grace for all mankind, cannot but in a short time be filled with love and charity to all: and the frequent exercise of his love in this manner, will insensibly enlarge his heart, and make him partaker of that exceeding abundance of it which is in Christ Jesus our Lord!
Envy, malice, revenge, and such like hellish tempers, can never long harbor in a gracious intercessor's breast; but he will be filled with joy, peace, meekness, long-suffering, and all other graces of the Holy Spirit. By frequently laying his neighbor's wants before God, he will be touched with a fellow-feeling of them; he will rejoice with those that do rejoice, and weep with those that weep. Every blessing bestowed on others, instead of exciting envy in him, will be looked on as an answer to his particular intercession, and fill his soul with joy unspeakable and full of glory.
