In a garden, on the night He was betrayed, Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father…”
The seventeenth chapter of John’s Gospel records for us the words our Lord said to His Father in Heaven. This passage is referred to as The High Priestly Prayer. In it, the first five verses are prayers for Himself, these are truth statements regarding authority, eternity, glory.
Then Jesus prays for His disciples. In verse nine, I pray for them…referring to those with Him in the Garden. Can there possibly be any higher request than those our Savior prayed, interceding for His own?
There are Five specific requests Jesus prays. These prayers are perfect requests, they align exactly to the Fathers Will for His people, and as such they were answered—and are still being answered!
Jesus asks the Father to keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are. (v. 11)
Jesus asks the Father should keep them from the evil one. (v. 15)
Jesus asks the Father to sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. (v. 17)
In verse 20, Jesus expands His praying to all believers, not only those in the Garden: I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word…and then,
4. Jesus asks the Father that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me…(v. 21)
5. Jesus asks the Father that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; (v. 24)
He is asking that His Heavenly Father would keep us in Him, and keep us from the evil one, to sanctify us in His word, that we be in unity with Him, and be with Him beholding His glory.
If these five prayers from our Lord Christ are for those who believe, follow, trust, love, obey, and serve Him, then we also ought to be praying these—interceding for one another.
We don’t need brand new prayers—we need to echo those of Jesus!
Jesus told Peter that the devil intended to sift them like wheat, but then He said, I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. Jesus asked the Father on their behalf!
Let us be in our own garden, praying these same prayers for all the saints of God each day this week, that He would keep us, protect us, perfect us, make us one with Him, and experience His glory. These will be answered according the Lords purpose and plan, for Jesus sake.
