May Prayer Briefing
Covering: spiritual warfare and praying; the created privilege we have in prayer; waiting longer on the Lord; persisting in prayer, plus watching the Master
Our Prayer For You
Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful, as you pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may declare it clearly, as I should. Act wisely toward outsiders, redeeming the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.
Colossians 4:2-6 BSB
Almighty Lord, we make this our prayer for Your children today, Amen.
On Spiritual Warfare
I recently listened to a podcast featuring Lt. Colonel Dave Grossman -Retired U.S. Army, and pulled a couple of good quotes on prayer and warfare:
In normal war, says Grossman, you win in large part by killing the enemy. In spiritual warfare, we win by saving them. The purpose of spiritual warfare is to save souls.
That’s in keeping with Scripture because we don’t defeat our enemy, God does. Our focus ought be on reaching the lost with the good news of Jesus, asking the Lord to let them see the Light.
Grossman also details the spiritual armor listed in Ephesians 6, and points out prayer as a most valuable tool for our warfare:
The verse after the sword, pray ceaselessly in the spirit. Prayer is our radio. Look, I'm an infantry soldier on the battlefield. All I got is what I can carry on my back, and that ain't much at all. But I get on the radio, and I can call in artillery. I can call in airstrikes. I can call in medivac. I can call in resupply. I can maneuver other elements. I can give my higher power the information they need to succeed in the battle. We've got to pray. We've got to pray.
Yes, yes, we’ve got to pray. And prayer is our radio to call on the Lord. I love that!
The entire podcast—hosted by
at Christian Warrior Training, is worth a 40 minute listen. Here is a recent article I liked
suggests a “categorical shift in your view of prayer could be helpful.”
Genesis 1:28 reminds us that communication with God is a creational privilege we have as image-bearers.
"I think Christians fail so often to get answers to their prayers because they do not wait long enough on God. They just drop down and say a few words, and then jump up and forget it and expect God to answer them. Such praying always reminds me of the small boy ringing his neighbor's door-bell, and then running away as fast as he can go."
