Learning from Old Testament Prayers
Articles from the Archives: Lessons from Scripture
This will be a busy week for me, with cramming 5 days work in 3 and then traveling. We will spend Thanksgiving with my wife’s family, our kids and granddaughter. She is 17 months old and we haven’t seen her in person since her first birthday party.
So articles posted this week will look at articles past. These are from 2021, when I had less than 10 subscribers, so most readers won’t have seen them. I pray they bless you now.
What Was Common in Old Praying
The ancient Israelite’s prayed to the Lord God, from Moses to Daniel - and especially David as recorded in the Psalms. But many others are recorded as calling out to the Lord, like Nehemiah, Hannah, and Elisha. Prayers are a common activity in many of God’s people from old.
Many of these are recorded for us in the Scriptures and give to us a basis and foundation for our prayers today.

How do we know that the Lord even hears us when we pray?
Calling, Hearing, And Answering
We can see throughout the Psalms that when they cried out to the Lord, He heard and answered:
I cried unto the LORD with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill - Psalm 3:4
In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, into his ears. Psalm 18:6
Blessed be the LORD, because he hath heard the voice of my supplications. Psalm 28:6
I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. Psalm 34:4
Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses. Psalm 107:6
I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications. Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live. Psalm 116:1-2
In my distress I cried unto the LORD, and he heard me. Psalm 120:1
These seven are a sample, there are significantly more examples in Scripture, which certainly ought to encourage us that when we call, He hears and answers.

What happens when it goes well with the righteous? Proverbs 11 tells us the city rejoices! A city is exalted by the blessing of the upright (v. 11).
Let us approach the Lord in Heaven and ask for elected and appointed men and women in government authority to be those who are upright, who desire and pursue integrity, honesty and loyalty in all they do.
Blessing Of The Upright: Prayers for righteous governments; for revivals; for all the saints.
