The prayers found in the Scriptures are God’s prayers, that is, God’s people (like Jesus and Paul) prayed these prayers, and God preserved them for us in the inspired text. We too can pray them and count on them being answered — because Almighty God intends on answering them.
Indeed, He has been answering them! God intends that the church might be filled with all the fullness of God (Ephesians 3:19). Jesus prayed not only for his disciples, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word…(John 17:20) that means us! So too should we pray for others who believe.
We typically include a number of them near the end of each newsletter in Praying for the People of God from the Word of God. Our hope is that each of us will be praying for the Church from the same verse each day.
In these verses, the words them, or you refer to a specific group of people in that day. During our prayers from these passages, we replace those words (you) with a specific church, or pastor, or ministry, or region in our day. This personalizes the passage and prayer and we apply it to those in our own circle of awareness.
Seven Scripture Prayers For The Church
Ephesians 1:17-19
Ephesians 3:16-19
Ephesians 6:18-20
Philippians 1:9-11
Colossians 1:9-12
Colossians 3:12-17
Colossians 4:12
There is a lot packed in to each of these passages, so going through even one per day will supply numerous themes and specifics. Try not to cover every single thing every time, but let the Lord highlight one part of the passage to pray, then perhaps move to another theme slowly.
This is not a race, but we like not to sprint through the verse and go at a more marathon pace. Remember, there is no wrong way to pray direct from the Word. Let it be your starting place, your guide, and your landing. This will help us keep focus when you or someone in the group drifts away for a bit.
These and many other prayer passages are prayers that the Lord loves to hear prayed, we cannot wear them out! They are promises He will answer if we will but ASK.
